The Christmas Crocodile

The Big Cheese Band is Lea Mae Camarda, Holly Rose Weber, Chris Dugmore, and Larry Rice. Larry teaches music for a living, and Larry’s 3-year-old ukulele student, Jack Morrison, came up with the idea for “The Christmas Crocodile.” Larry had discovered that Jack enjoyed writing songs when learning chords for his uke, so in November 2014, Larry asked Jack “What shall we write about today?” Jack replied, “The Christmas Crocodile,” and dictated many of the things such a being might do or say–for example, Jack noted, the Christmas Crocodile says “Pinch, pinch, pinch.”

The Big Cheese Band then used Jack’s words as a basis for the recording–as a reward for Jack’s mom, who had made a pledge to a KickStarter campaign for our live CD, “Live Culture”. Jack sings the first line and counts the rest of us in.

We recorded it in on August 7th, 2015 at Cue Studios in Falls Church.  Jim Ebert was the producer and Sean Russell the engineer.  We included a children’s choir that included some of Larry’s students and friends.

We released it as a single in October of 2015.  On December 8th it went to #18 on Adult Contemporary stations nationwide.  It was a thrill to be in a list that included Ed Sheeran (“Photograph”) and Taylor Swift (“Wildest Dreams”).

That’s right Jack. I’ve replaced the number 26 picture with the current one that shows it at number 18. The next week it went to number 17 but I don’t have that screen shot.
